Chapter 26

Hex awoke in the same bed with the same blankets covering him, though they didn’t feel quite as heavy as before. He shifted his weight groggily until he was finally able to manage a sitting position, and with the effort, a hundred years of drying spit dribbled from his jowls. Someone had left him a bowl of water on the nightstand, and he eagerly gulped it down.

There was a loud knock at the door, which opened before Hex could even welcome the visitor in.

“Oh good, you’re awake,” came a curt, familiar voice. Lia, wearing her uniform, made her way into the room and stood beside his bed. “We’re heading out soon, and Satchel instructed me to bring you along when we do.” She squinted at Hex with a skeptical look in her eye. “He said I was to carry you, so hopefully you can change into something a little . . . smaller?”

Hex laughed to himself as he quickly changed shape. She’s always right to the point. He decided on a mouse, though even with his tiny body, it was still difficult to move around. Lia noticed this and quickly picked him up.

“Where do you want to sit?” she asked.

“Maybe your front pocket?” Hex said. “That way I can still see where we’re going.”

Lia gave him a deathly stare, seemingly unwilling to accommodate Hex’s request.

“Or . . . on your shoulder,” Hex quickly offered. “If that’s better for you.”

“It is,” she said flatly. She lifted the tiny creature and placed him on her shoulder. He used his fingers and toes to latch onto the fabric of her uniform. It wouldn’t be as comfortable as sitting in a pocket, but he’d have to make the best of it.

“So when are we leaving?” Hex asked.

“Right now,” Lia returned. “Everyone’s ready and waiting outside the capital.”

“Would you mind making a quick detour?” Hex asked hopefully. “I wanted to say goodbye to Presea. I know she always worries about me.”

“Oh,” Lia started. “She’s not in the capital anymore, didn’t you know?”

“She’s not? Where is she?”

“She headed back for Aurelia’s.”

“What?”

“Yeah,” Lia said. She furrowed her eyebrows at him. “Didn’t she tell you? She said she needed to warn Aurelia about what’s been going on.”

“This is all news to me,” Hex let out. He didn’t understand why she’d leave without telling him. Though I guess I did the same when I headed back to Westerfall . . .

But he was even more unnerved that she was traveling across the kingdom without him. New Batical had become an extremely dangerous place as of late, and Presea had never made the trip on her own. She was a cautious girl, but it didn’t stop him from worrying.

“Satchel dispatched some of the City Guard to escort her,” Lia said. She must have sensed his uneasiness. “I’m sure she’ll be fine.”

“Yeah,” Hex agreed dejectedly. “I’m sure.”

Lia headed out into the castle hallway and ducked through the hectic crowds of people, who all seemed to be shouting and running in circles—Guardsmen, soldiers, civilians.
